The End of the Fertility Transition in the Developed World

Zusammenfassung

"By the late 1990s the average period total fertility rate in the developed world had declined to 1.6, a level substantially lower than projected in the 1970s and 1980s. This article examines recent trends and patterns in fertility in the developed world with particular emphasis on the effects and implications of changes in the timing of childbearing. The main objective is to demonstrate that while fertility in these countries is indeed low, women's childbearing levels are not as low as period measures such as the total fertility rate suggest. To obtain a full understanding of the various dimensions of fertility change, several indicators are examined, including period and cohort fertility by birth order and childbearing preferences. An analysis of these indicators demonstrates that period fertility measures in many developed countries are temporarily depressed by a rise in the mean age at childbearing. The distortion of the TFR is as great as 0.4 births per woman in Italy and Spain. These effects have been present in many developed countries since the 1970s and could continue for years into the future. But tempo effects are temporary, and once the postponement of childbearing ends--as it eventually must--the corresponding fertility-depressing effect stops, thus putting upward pressure on period fertility. Countries with very low fertility and substantial tempo effects may well experience rises in fertility in the near future if the timing of childbearing stabilizes. Even if this happens, however, it seems unlikely that fertility will rebound to the replacement level."

  
     
 
       
   

Das Ende des Geburtenrückgangs in der Debatte

LEVINE, Tom (2001): Praktizierte Gleichberechtigung - größere Kinderzahl,
 Familienpolitik - Kinder oder Inder oder was? Deutschland ist angesichts der sinkenden Geburtenzahlen aus jahrzehntelanger Lethargie erwacht. Manche Staaten sind längst munterer,
 in: Berliner Zeitung v. 14.04.

  • Der Bevölkerungsstatistiker Ron LESTHAEGHE kritisiert, dass die deutschen Statistiker dem Umstand, dass Frauen immer später in ihrem Leben Kinder kriegen, nicht genügend Beachtung schenken würden:

     "Betrachte man - anders als die deutsche Statistik - nicht nur die aktuelle Geburtenentwicklung pro Jahr, sondern das jeweilige Verhalten von Frauen-Altersgruppen (so genannten 'Kohorten'), so werde deutlich, dass der Geburtenrückgang langfristig weniger dramatisch sein dürfte. Die Frauen der Jahrgänge 1957 bis 1961 etwa hätten zwar viel später mit dem Kinderkriegen angefangen als ihre Vorgängerinnen, aber dann aufgeholt: Die Geburtenrate ihrer Altersgruppe liegt bei rund 1,6 Kindern pro Frau; verglichen mit 1,8 für die Jahrgänge 1942-1946. Die heute 35- bis 40-Jährigen hätten bereits jetzt eine Rate von 1,5 erreicht - obwohl sie sich durchschnittlich noch länger Zeit gelassen hätten, bevor das erste Baby kam."

  • Was single-generation.de seit über 2 Jahren den deutschen Demografen immer wieder vorwirft - nämlich zu niedrige Geburtenziffern für Deutschland zu berechnen - das beweist nun Detlef GÜRTLER in diesem Artikel.  Auch der Vorwurf, dass absichtlich Handlungsdruck erzeugt wurde, klingt bei Detlef GÜRTLER an. Es ist zu hoffen, dass die Bevölkerungswissenschaftler nun zur Stellungnahme gezwungen werden und auch andere Journalisten Druck ausüben.
